THE YEAR AFTER CUSTER

By Myles Murchison

An itinerant cowboy, John Rundy, is mistaken by the retreating Nez Perce nation as a messenger from the Great Spirit. Is it accident or spiritual design that every contact Rundy makes with the Nez Perce assists them as the Indigenous nation fights its way across the northwestern American territories to join Sitting Bull and the Sioux in Canada?

 About MYLES MURCHISON

Myles Murchison describes himself as a journeyman writer. He writes, he says, for whatever market is available and he has had some notable successes in his career.

  • For his work in radio, he received the international Edward R. Murrow Award -- along with three Canadian Association of Broadcasters News Awards, and runner-up in the Governor General’s Award – for writing and producing broadcast documentaries.
  • His first theatrical script was chosen as Best New Play in western Canada; his second play was performed in London’s West End.
  • His first novel sold over the transom without an agent to Random House in New York.
  • His magazine stories have received a National Magazine Award, a Western Canada Magazine Award and the Jack Webster Award for business writing.
  • Recently, he sold his first screenplay, a short film set in Moscow, which will be produced in Russian with English subtitles.

Heartmind: What inspired you to start writing?

I wrote a little essay in grade four and read it out in class. It was a big success. I’m sure it was the first time anybody in school ever noticed me.

Heartmind: What was your first writing job?

I was nervy and desperate for attention as a teenager. Sometimes I wish I could re-find that in myself. Anyway, I submitted an outlandish, self-promoting column to the Winnipeg Free Press (my hometown paper at the time), they bought it, I left school to become a newspaper copyboy, a movie critic and the editor of the newspaper’s weekly ‘Teen Page.’ For me, it was like winning a Pulitzer. That newspaper office with typewriters clacking, the teletypes ringing and people earning a living writing was like heaven.

Heartmind: But you left the newspaper business...

Yes, I discovered I wasn’t suited for the profession. Journalists view the world very critically. They can become cynical and it seemed to me they lived unhappy lives. Anyway, I wanted to be a radio star which looked like more fun to my younger self. Unfortunately, I lacked the genial personality necessary and began to write commercials instead. I had a talent for it and that brought me to Vancouver, CKNW, advertising agencies, video production and broadcast documentaries. And all the while I wrote novels and plays, and later magazine stories and now screenplays.

Heartmind: Often from a ‘spiritual’ point of view...

Yes, I’m one of those people who believe we are spirits having a human adventure, although I still take the human part too seriously.

Heartmind: Any advice to other writers?

What’s to be said that hasn’t already been said? I`ve read that John Gresham writes an hour a day every morning. That sounds like good advice. So did Arthur Hailey`s approach which I read was to dress up in a shirt and tie, go to your desk, and write as if you were working in an office for eight hours a day. In my case, at first I just wanted to be a writer. That is to say, to be known as a writer. Entirely egocentric. Pretty quickly I learned it required that you actually had to write. That`s the hard part. You just have to do it however you can.
